Kim Jones’ Dior continues to push the boundaries of directional menswear—making accessible organza pieces, reinterpreting the ‘Saddle’ bag and making waves in the footwear market. In Spring 2023, Jones has teamed up with ERL’s Eli Russell Linnetz to launch a new capsule collection called “California Couture.”
As the first guest-designed collaboration between Jones and Linnetz, the capsule was presented in Venice Beach, California, the brand’s first location.A large number of ERL x Dior models wore on the runway in vibrant pastel satin suits, quilted down jackets, Christmas-colored lamé tops and comfy half-zip jumpers.
Chunky grey cable-knit sweater with intricate white pearl beads, ’90s-inspired blazer upside down, fabric lining worn on the outside to show off the retro “CD” logo graphic, tuxedo pants with crystal-embellished side panels, and Oversized jeans and shorts in a light stonewashed finish.
While the collaboration accessories are paired with the corresponding outfits, the accessories lineup is strong enough to carry its own show. The new mini “Saddle” bag – named “Male Minaudiere” – comes in precious gold and Christmas tinsel, skate sneakers with satin and leather quilting, beanies with pearl detailing and Tie-up flap at top.
Looking back on the collection, Jones (Dior Menswear Artistic Director) told HYPEBEAST, “I wanted to bring new energy to Dior with color and fashion. Watching the last show in LA, I think we did a great job! I love LA. It’s the American way, the American way of looking at sportswear. And the idea of Christian Dior in America, the glamour of that era in the movies.”
“Continuous re-creation is absolutely necessary to satisfy our customers. Consistency is very important. We have to create something that delights our customers and fills our store with the variety of products they will buy,” he added. Say.
Linnetz also took a closer look at their design collocations, saying: “We’ve been looking at the Dior archives since 1991, the year I was born. It was part of Dior’s history during Gianfranco Ferré’s tenure as artistic director, and there’s no shortage of love for gold. It’s new to me.”
Moments of time and history collide in a collection that spans generations and spaces,” he added.
As ERL x Dior’s ocean-blue runway engulfed the last of the models, the last few looks were reminiscent of lavish sailors riding both coast waves and street waves in California cities.
